Food hoses: which one to use for each product

A food hose has to be non-toxic, impart no odour or taste to the product and withstand plant cleaning. To choose one you need to know which product will flow through it (milk, wine, oil or solids), whether it works in delivery or in suction and at what temperature it is cleaned. Depending on the model, they comply with the FDA or with the European regulations EC 1935/2004 and EU 10/2011.

Frequently asked questions about food hoses

Which standards must a food hose meet?

In Europe, Regulation EC 1935/2004, on materials in contact with food, and EU 10/2011, on plastics. For export to the United States, the FDA is required. Each data sheet states the standards that model meets.

Which hose should I use for wine?

For racking in the winery, Enovin, a PVC hose with helix, up to 50° of alcohol. If you need a higher temperature or higher alcohol strengths, Milk butyl, which can be cleaned with steam. The usual couplings are ITA (garrolla), DIN 11851 and Clamp, in stainless steel.

Which hose should I use for olive oil?

Olioflex, in PVC with polymeric plasticisers, or Spring PU olive oil, with a polyurethane inner layer suitable for fatty foods (simulant D2). Both work in suction and delivery.

Can they be cleaned with steam?

It depends on the model. Milk butyl can take steam at 130 °C for 30 minutes, Chemical UPE can take peaks of 130 °C and Steam-170 is made for saturated steam. The PVC ones, such as Enovin, Spring or Olioflex, work up to +60 °C and do not tolerate steam.

Which hose should I use for flour, sugar or cereals?

A polyurethane hose with helix, such as Tecnipur-S or Tecnipur-VAC, or the rubber hose for delivery of abrasive food products. They are antistatic or conductive and suitable for ATEX zones, because the dust from these products can be explosive.
