Fire hoses: models, sizes and pressures
A fire hose, or firefighter hose, is a lay-flat hose made of rubber and textile fabric that carries water under pressure to the nozzle or equipment. Tecniman offers two models, Red lay-flat and Synthetic lay-flat, for fire protection systems, fire stations, civil construction and water transfer.
Red lay-flat and Synthetic lay-flat
| Model | Construction | Inside (mm) | Pressure (bar) | Temperature |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Red lay-flat | Red rubber with polyester textile reinforcement | 25 · 45 · 70 | 40 to 18 | -30 to +80 °C |
| Synthetic lay-flat | White synthetic fabric outside; rubber and synthetic materials inside | 25 to 200 | 30 to 5 | -30 to +90 °C |
The Red lay-flat is very light, resists abrasion and withstands both contact and radiant heat. The Synthetic lay-flat is very flexible and has an outer thread with a moisture-resistant treatment that gives it high abrasion resistance. Both are supplied in rolls of 30 to 60 m.
How to choose a firefighter hose
Start with the inside diameter, which must match the coupling and the equipment. In both models the working pressure falls as the diameter increases: the Red lay-flat goes from 40 bar at 25 mm to 18 bar at 70 mm, and the Synthetic lay-flat from 30 bar at 25 mm to 5 bar at 200 mm. Above 70 mm only the Synthetic lay-flat is available.
Frequently asked questions about fire hoses
What pressure can a fire hose withstand?
It depends on the model and the diameter. The Red lay-flat works at 40 bar at 25 mm, 21 bar at 45 mm and 18 bar at 70 mm. The Synthetic lay-flat ranges from 30 bar at 25 mm to 15 bar between 52 and 125 mm, 10 bar at 150 mm and 5 bar at 200 mm.
Which firefighter hose diameters are available?
The Red lay-flat is made in 25, 45 and 70 mm inside diameter. The Synthetic lay-flat comes in 17 sizes from 25 to 200 mm, including 32, 38, 45, 52, 70, 100 and 150 mm.
Which hose complies with UNE 23091-2A?
The Red lay-flat complies with the UNE 23091-2A standard. It is our model of maximum resistance and durability for fire-fighting systems.
Can they be used for anything other than fire-fighting?
Yes. The Red lay-flat is suitable for water transfer and for dewatering pumps, and the Synthetic lay-flat is also used in civil construction.
What is the difference between the Red lay-flat and the Synthetic lay-flat?
The red one is rubber with polyester reinforcement; it takes more pressure at the same diameter and resists radiant heat, and it is made in three sizes. The synthetic one has a white, moisture-treated fabric outer, withstands up to +90 °C and goes up to 200 mm in diameter.
