Pneumatic hose: materials, sizes and pressures

A pneumatic hose, or pneumatic tube, is a flexible engineering-plastic tube that carries compressed air from the air supply line or compressor to cylinders, valves, tools and machines. It is sized by inside and outside diameter, and its material determines the pressure, temperature and flexibility it can handle in each installation.

Types of pneumatic tubing

ModelMaterialInside (mm)Pressure (bar)Temperature
Polyamide tubingSemi-transparent polyamide2.5 to 1311 to 36-40 to +100 °C
Polyurethane tubingBlue 98 Shore polyurethane2.5 to 128 to 15-40 to +80 °C
PU RobotPolyurethane reinforced with polyester fibre6.3 to 1916 to 25-20 to +80 °C
Teflon tubePTFE2 to 175 to 42Up to +250 °C
FEP tubingFluorinated ethylene propylene, transparent2 to 127 to 30Up to +204 °C
PVDF pipePolyvinylidene fluoride, transparent2 to 1015 to 37Up to +140 °C

How to choose a pneumatic hose

For general air installations, polyamide withstands higher pressure and temperature and is stiffer. Polyurethane is more flexible and elastic, even in the cold, and resists abrasion well, which is why it is used on machines and in robotics. For parts in continuous movement there is PU Robot, reinforced and silicone-free. Teflon, FEP and PVDF tubes are reserved for aggressive fluids, high temperatures or food applications.

Frequently asked questions about pneumatic hoses

What is the difference between polyamide and polyurethane tubing?

Polyamide takes higher pressure (up to 36 bar in 2.5 x 4 mm) and reaches +100 °C, with low gas permeability. Polyurethane reaches +80 °C, but is more flexible and elastic, ideal for sections that bend or move.

How is the size of a pneumatic tube given?

By the inside and outside diameter in millimetres, for example 6 x 8 or 8 x 10. The outside diameter is the one to check when choosing a push-in fitting, which grips the outer wall of the tube.

Is there a coiled pneumatic hose?

Yes. Polyamide and polyurethane tubing are also supplied as coiled hoses with fittings, in several lengths. Polyamide coils have a 1/4", 3/8" or 1/2" male thread depending on the diameter, and polyurethane coils a 1/4" or 3/8" thread.

Which pneumatic tube is suitable for robots?

PU Robot, made of polyurethane reinforced with polyester fibre and silicone-free, designed for industrial robotics. It comes in blue, black, red or green, from 6.3 to 19 mm inside diameter.

Can a pneumatic tube be used with food or chemicals?

Teflon, FEP and PVDF tubes comply with FDA and BfR food standards and offer excellent chemical resistance. For standard compressed air, polyamide and polyurethane are the usual choice.
