Hydraulic fittings: threads, types and assembly
Hydraulic fittings join the hoses and tubes of an oil circuit to pumps, valves and cylinders, at pressures of hundreds of bar. To choose them you need to know three things: the hose (standard and diameter), the thread type of the equipment and the type of joint, which can be crimped, reusable or for rigid tube.
Families of hydraulic fittings
| Family | What it includes | Threads |
|---|---|---|
| Crimp fittings | Ferrules and two-piece fittings (Italian system) | BSP, metric, JIC, NPT, NPSM, ORFS and flange |
| One-piece fittings | Straight, 45º and 90º swivel nuts, fixed male and spherical ends | BSP, JIC/SAE and metric |
| Fittings for 4SH hose | Swivel nuts and flanges, straight, 45º and 90º | BSP, JIC/SAE and metric |
| Reusable fittings | Assembled with a spanner, no press | BSP |
| Fittings for DIN 2353 tube | Straight unions, elbows, tees, bulkhead unions, nuts and olives | BSP and metric |
| Adaptors | Straight, 90º, tees, banjo bolts, spherical and reduced nuts | BSP, JIC/SAE and metric combined |
| Weld-on fittings | Swivel female ends, fixed male ends, sockets, spherical ends and flat flanges with neck and stub end | — |
| Low-pressure fittings | Conical or flat seat, also in brass, for sanitary, water heater and gas applications | BSP, metric and gas |
| Quick couplings and valves | ISO 7241-1 series A and B poppet, ISO 5675 ball, flat face; check valves and 2- and 3-way valves | BSP |
In addition: fittings and handles for pressure washers, pressure gauges and vacuum gauges, and oils and fixing compounds.
Frequently asked questions about hydraulic fittings
How do I know what thread my fitting has?
The most common are BSP (gas thread in inches, 60º conical seat), metric (24º conical seat), JIC (UNF thread, 37º cone), NPT (American taper) and ORFS (flat face with O-ring). They are identified by the outside diameter of the thread, the pitch and the seat angle. If in doubt, speak to our advisers.
What is the difference between a crimp fitting and a reusable one?
The crimp fitting is fixed to the hose with a hose-crimping press and is the most common joint. The reusable one is assembled with a spanner, without a press, and can be recovered when the hose is changed; it is used mainly for repairs and with R5 hose.
What are one-piece and two-piece fittings?
In the one-piece type, the ferrule and the fitting come joined from the factory. In the two-piece type, or Italian system, they are assembled separately, so the same fitting can be combined with the ferrule for each type of hose (1SN, 2SN, 4SP…).
What is a DIN 2353 fitting?
It is the cutting-ring fitting for rigid steel tube. When the nut is tightened, the olive bites into the tube and makes the seal. It is used in the hydraulic piping of machines and equipment.
Which hydraulic quick coupling do I need?
The one with the same standard and size as the one your machine already has: ISO 7241-1 series A or series B poppet, ISO 5675 ball, common on tractors, or flat face, which barely spills any oil when connecting and disconnecting. Only couplings of the same standard connect to each other.
